Continuing Professional Development
Accredited Practitioner Register • Continuing Professional Development
The Register recognises the importance of CPD in maintaining high standards of professional practice.
Our definition of CPD states that it is specific learning activities through which practitioners develop and enhance their knowledge and skills throughout their careers.
Members must complete 15–25 hours of CPD annually (minimum 5 equine-related), keep records, and may include relevant hours from other memberships. Non-UK equivalences are recognised, and records may be checked during audits. CPD ensures practitioners continue to practice safely and effectively while keeping up to date with new ideas and techniques in their field.
The Register recognises a variety of CPD formats, including:
Practical experience – observing or shadowing colleagues, joining meetings, or working alongside senior practitioners.
Formal training – topic-based courses such as first aid, technical skills, or qualifications.
Personal learning – attending conferences, events, or conducting independent research.
Members are expected to complete 15–25 hours per year.
At least 5 hours should be directly related to animal, equine or horticultural activities.
Hours from other professional register memberships may be counted if relevant.
Hours above 25 may be undertaken but cannot be carried forward to future years.
The Register also recognises that CPD definitions vary internationally. For example, in the US, CPD is measured as a Continuing Education Unit (CEU), where 1 CEU = 10 hours of accredited professional education.
Local equivalences for non-UK practitioners are recognised, and other definitions may be considered upon request.
Registrants must keep CPD records, including:
The activity undertaken.
Where or with whom it was completed.
Duration in hours.
The benefit to their practice.
Annual submission of CPD records is not required, but they may be requested during the Register’s annual audit process.
